A few years ago, in real life, my mom regularly met with a psychic who was also a real estate agent. One day, my mom sought her clairvoyant insights into a house she had been trying to buy. The psychic was incensed that my mom had been using another realtor. I guess she had a point: why bother with a real estate agent who isn’t blessed with the gift of the second sight? For better or worse, their relationship ended there.

Yesterday, I produced a very tasty gelato.

The flavor: Amarula
The ice cream maker: Cuisinart Pure Indulgence
The sous-chef: Steve

Amarula gelato has a mild citrus flavor, with a slight hint of booze. It a custard-based gelato, consisting of cream, sugar, egg yolks and Amarula cream liqueur, a South African liqueur made from the Marula fruit of the Elephant Tree.

I first discovered this gelato at the ice cream store where I worked during high school. It was one of our most unusual and unpopular flavors. I think it was the “Elephant Tree” thing that drove people away.

But in fact, it’s delightful.

As far as I can tell, the recipe comes from some sort of proto-food blog, “What, ME Cook?” by this guy Dr. Bob and his “cooking team.” It is available on CD-ROM.

Zaragoza has the best burritos I’ve ever had in my life. I crave it every single day, but I save it for special occasions.

I recommend eating a goat, pork, ground beef, or chipotle chicken burrito, and making friends with the resident bodega cat. Yes–it does have a bodega cat and almost every other identifying characteristic of a bodega, but don’t be fooled by its outward appearance. This place is home to a true gastronomic wonder.
